Okay guys, I gotta ask.  I know the guy was eying up you both and his plan was probably to jump you with his buddies once you were outside, but was firing on him without even talking/warning/threatening him the right thing to do?

Now I'll admit, it might be something Trax may pull, but unless the target is wearing an imperial uniform he won't typically open up on anyone unless they try something first, but Trax isn't force sensitive and is pretty loose with what passes for his morals.  But for you guys, shooting someone without serious provocation doesn't seem very jedi like to me.

My plan wasn't to shoot him...I was going pull a Han and tell him to put his hands on the table.

My plan was definitely to stun him after seeing the two guys waiting outside.  Asking him to place his hands on the table would probably have gotten all of the patrons in the cantina aiming guns at us anyway.  Asking him to walk out the back with us would have gotten the same result.  The guy had a full face helmet and rebreather on.  What if we let on that we knew he was checking us out, and he popped a knockout gas cannister?  What if we did nothing, played dumb, and both walked out of the cantina?  We'd have the two guys outside to worry about as well as the guy in the bar behind us.  Make a dash for the back, and give the guy a potential free shot at our backs?  And who's to say that there isn't another pair of goons waiting out back?

After all the bounty hunters and pirates that Niil has had coming after him, he wasn't very keen on strolling into an ambush/snatch and grab attempt when he knew it was about to unfold.  So, he decided to throw a monkey wrench into the works and hopefully gain some time to react.  If the guy is truly innocent (ie not a bounty hunter, Impy spy, criminal or some other sort of baddie), then Niil made a boo-boo.  At least the guy will wake up from it, albeit with a wee headache.

Thanks for replying.  I just never pictured Niil as a shoot first ask questions later type guy.

Normally, no.   ;)  But the whole scene just reeked of a setup, and I'd rather surprise them than vice-versa.  I was pretty positive the cantina locals wouldn't take it too kindly, though, but the last thing I wanted was us caught between the guys outside and the dude inside the cantina.  The guys outside recognized Niil, so he figures they're either Imperial snitches/bounty hunters, or they're allied with those pirates we encountered a few days ago.

I feel the need to step in here.

Quote from: Jedi Code
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.

Your justifications are all hypothetical, and based on assumptions. Here are some other hypothetical situations:

What if he was a member of the local constabulary, eyeing up some strange looking newcomers?
What if he was a friend of Jeremy Wilton looking to protect him?
What if he really liked heavy blaster pistols and was checking yours out?
What if you looked like someone he knew?
What if he wasn't watching you at all, and was just making eyes at the barkeep?
What if he was playing Candy Asteroid Crush on his in-helmet display?
What if he is an alien and an oxygen-rich environment is toxic?
What if he was a reporter doing a story?
What if he was security for the cantina?
Maybe Jeremy owes him money?

What if he was an agent of the rebels looking to make covert contact?

The reactions of the guys outside were suspicious, I grant you, though you had no information beyond that they recognized you and appear to have not wanted you to be aware of them. But you had no idea what the reason for their reaction was.

That might justify pulling a gun on the guy inside, maybe. But just walking up and pulling the trigger where there was no clear and present threat was, even by a generous interpretation, contrary to the Jedi code. Stun bolts are not passive. He did not fall gently asleep. You shocked his nervous system and made him loose consciousness from neural overload, effectively rebooting his brain. The fact you spared his life meant you did not get a warning about Dark Side points (and a chance to change your action), but the world Niil plays in would see it as an unprovoked hostile act.

Bottom line: there were any number of possible responses to the situation. You chose a non-lethal, but violent one.

I'm not telling you this was a mistake - I do not do that. My games are open-world, and you're free to do as you wish. But I agree with Ken that it seems significantly out of character given your past play style.

Again, I'm not judging, just explaining what I and perhaps others saw. You guys are free to make whatever choices you want - perhaps the stress of being hunted is getting to Niil? He has a dark history with bounty hunters and Imperial agents, after all, and recently had a very close brush with an Imperial Jedi hunter. The proximity of the Empire and the recent pirate attack might have made him particularly paranoid? Whatever the motivation, the decision to fire (like every decision you guys make in my games) will have consequences.

It's not a problem, Darren. I'm only writing this because your reply to Ken's question seemed to suggest that Darren the player thought Niil the character's actions were justified. Niil doesn't have to justify his actions, but I'm explaining this to you because few NPC's in the game world would agree with that assessment, so I don't want you to be surprised, angry or frustrated when the consequences of that action start to play out.

That's not a threat or foreshadowing, and it's not punishment. Every action you guys take has an organic impact on the world like a stone tossed into a pond, and so there are repercussions.

A lot of "what ifs", and yes, I considered many of those those before making my judgment call. Bottom line that decided it was the two helmeted guys outside that were trying really hard not to look like they recognized Niil (or "Tak").  In the past, nothing good has ever happened from someone recognizing Niil.  Niil has been shot at in the midst of a crowd before (Mr. Whitehawk).

Was it a freakin' great risk Niil took in tagging the guy with a stun bolt?  Of course it was, and I didn't make that choice lightly.  I ran over the logic that they might be cops, or debt collectors, or bounty hunters, or a pirate kill squad, or Imperial spies . . . or even Jeremy, "rebel" sympathizers, or Master Ch'lana himself.  And I asked a lot of questions about each possibility.  If they were "good guys" and knew me, why not speak up - even covertly?  Why didn't the guys outside give me a brief nod or some sign?

Was he justified?  I didn't say he was.  He didn't like having to do that, but he'd rather run the risk of being wrong than having Collan and himself caught in a takedown.

Niil whirled on Collan, his face clouded in anger and exhaustion.  "No, you don't see, Collan.  You know drek about my past.  My master and I were run down like dogs for months before I got dumped off on Karvis.  Not just hunted by bounty hunters - and hell, there were a lot of those - but by dark Jedi.  I had to watch Master Dhoresh get cut down as I was being hustled on to an escape ship.  Ever sleep in a drainage culvert for nearly two weeks, scrounging for half-eaten, flyblown food out of cantina garbage bins?  Do you know how many bounty hunters have come after me since I was dumped off on this rock?  Do you know why they come after me?  The Empire hires them to go after Force-sensitives, but I guess you already know that."  Niil laughed harshly.  "Oh, drek, they don't tell the hunters that part, but that doesn't really matter now, does it?"

Niil shuddered.  "I was told horror stories about what happens to Force-sensitive people the Empire captures.  Do you know how close that dark Jedi woman came to cutting me in half?  Damn it, Collan, I still bolt out of sleep thinking of it!  Dark Jedi, Imperial Intel, red-armored stormtroopers, bounty hunters like Blaine Whitehawk, gank-killers, Ploovo-Two-For-One?  And how many times I've walked into a situation like the one at the cantina here, only to find out the hard way that it was a set-up for a hit?  Malfing hell, and people wonder why I'm . . ."

Niil stopped talking abruptly, his mouth half-open.  He hesitated for a few moments, then shook his head.  ". . . paranoid.  Damn me.  Damn me for a malfing twitchy, rash idiot.  And to think I used to give Jex and Trax hell for being trigger-happy?"  He blew out a long, pent up breath and looked again at Collan.  "Collan, screw my excuses.  I misread a situation, jumped the gun and could've gotten us killed for my mistake.  The hell with me, I could've gotten you killed.  That won't happen again."

+1

So, what do the markings on this guy/gal's armor look like?

Indiana Jones once said, "Snakes . . . why did it have to be snakes?"

Niil Spaar says, "Bounty hunters . . . why does it have to be bounty hunters?"   ;D

Trax's blaster pistol (apparently) says "Pew pew pew." :)

Can't wait to see what his new heavy pistols say.  >:D

I'm thinking that the new blaster pistols will sound more like turbolasers.
