Questions about force powers
« on: April 18, 2016, 09:20:13 AM »
Wasn't sure where to put this, but this seemed like a fairly relevant spot.

As someone who has no clue how the rules for force powers work, I've got a question or two because it's not clear in the rule books.

First question, with Control Pain, assuming a jedi makes the roll, can they continue to operate as if unaffected even when they reach killed on the injury table?  If that's the case, how does one stop a jedi that's using that power?

Second question, can Concentration be used on reactive rolls like dodge or parry?

Dead is dead. A mortally wounded Jedi still makes the round by round roll to determine if they die that round.

And if it was my game, I'd say yes to concentration but only if going full defense and then you'd not be able to react to any other kind of attack.

Concentration must be premeditated. It cannot be used as a reaction. However, if someone declares full defence, concentration can apply to a single defensive skill.

For example, concentration on dodge for a round would work, but they would be vulnerable to a melee attack. Concentration cannot apply to Lightsaber Combat because that requires two skills to use - control and sense. Concentration precludes any other actions in a round.

As for your first question, a Jedi can use control pain to stay on their feet even when they are dying (mortally wounded). But once they doe, they are dead. There are ways of dealing with death, but that would require the aid of another Jedi.

So if a jedi is mortally wounded, they can stay on their feet as long as they make the 2D roll required each round that determine if they die?  And if an attack hits and the roll is enough that they move from mortally wounded to killed, are they then immediately down/dead?

Also, is the Control Pain roll subject to MAPs?

You are correct, but I'll expand on that - anything that stuns them forces them to drop all powers, including Control Pain.

And yes, the Control roll required for Control Pain is subject to MAPs.

What would stun them?  From that last fight it doesn't look like getting wounded does.

A Jed can also Resist Stun if they have the power

There are ways. It can be done. Ch'lana was wounded, and vulnerable for the better part of a round. But every time she tried to kill him, someone shot at her and forced her to deflect.

Think of the duel between Qui-gon and Darth Maul. Maul landed a melee strike, which stunned Qui-gon. Maul was then able to dispatch him easily, as all Qui-Gon's other powers came crashing down. Jedo duels tend to be long affairs, if the Jedi are well-matched, but also tend to end very quickly when they do end because someone gets stunned our wounded, and all their protections end. Their opponent is then able to dispatch them with ease.

Most Jedi powers are very powerful, but they also build MAPs at a prodigious rate. LSC is a two-action ability, before they even take a swing with their sabre. Control pain is one action. Combat Sense is two actions, etc etc. If a power has, for example, Control and Sense, then using that power counts as two actions. Keeping a power Up means those MAPs will apply.

Jedi are very good at defending against projectiles and blasters. Where they are weak is area effect weapons - grenades (if you can get it to go off), flame throwers, slug-thrower shotguns, neural inhibitors (think tazer), scatter blasters, repeating weapons, and similar things. They do have tricks and powers for dealing with those (absorb/dissipate energy, control pain, resist stun). But area weapons bypass their strongest defences, and they must incur additional MAP's to counter those.

In your example, what made the strike that stunned him different from a strike that could be ignored via control pain?  Or is it that his control pain roll would have failed on that hit?

The cumulative effects of multiple MAPs from attacks, defending, force powers, and he failed a control pain roll. Then all his powers came down, and Maul's were all still up.

It is hard to hurt a trained Jedi. But once you do manage to hurt them even a little, they'r generally dead.
