Collan: Before the Emperor
« on: February 26, 2016, 10:46:58 AM »
A curious thing happens to Collan. The words he spoke, while intending to deceive, seem to have a certain appeal. In spite of himself, he feels a certain pleasure in feeling the fear of the Imperial Guards as they carefully secure him with binders. He can almost feel the whisper of breath against his ear, speaking of power and glory. It would be a simple thing to make this ruse a reality. There is only the thinnest of veils between the lie and a potential reality.

Watched carefully, Collan proceeds down the corridor, losing sight of his friends who now glare at him with open hatred. Trax had been very close to trading his life for a shot at Collan, and he had heard Trax's pledge. Perhaps his speech had been too convincing? Collan even wonders himself for a moment if the words were actually true...

A second blast door opens, and Collan enters a large open space. Large viewports reveal the stars in space, and the curve of Horuz below them. To his left, some distance away, Collan spots several holding cells. Those within - he recognizes Bail Organa among them - rise and step to the edge of the energy field. He can feel the fear radiating from them. Except for one - a grey-haired man with a bandage over his eyes radiates only calm. That man turns sightless eyes on Collan, but seems to see him - look through him.

At length, the group halts, and the dark figure kneels, his head bowed. Above you is a raised dias. As you look, the chair slowly turns, and you see a pale face shrouded in the depths of a black cloak.

"What is this." The voice feels like ice.

The kneeling figure in black armour says, without lifting his head, "One of the Jedi invaders, my lord." The black figure pauses. "He claims to be the son of Lord Banen."

Collan's breath catches in his throat as he feels the full attention of the figure on the dias focus on him. Unbidden, memories flash through his inner eye, and he can feel icy fingers in his mind.

A moment later, the figure on the dias rises, and that act alone fills Collan with dread. Without any act of will, Collan drops to his knees and bows his head, fear gripping his heart.

"So, the son of Rostiern has been found at last. Long has my chief inquisitor been searching for you, my boy."

Collan is barely able to breathe. He feels completely naked and exposed.

"You have done well, Commander. Leave us."

Without a word, the black armoured figure rises and salutes. He and the guards turn and march away quickly.

Collan squeezes his eyes in an attempt to control his fear, but his heart is racing.

"I see through your lies, boy. But I also see the truth you hide from yourself." He chuckles, and the sound freezes Collan's blood.

Then, Collan feels something else, like a tiny thought blooming in the back of his mind. That thought blooms into a fully formed idea: Trust in the Force.

Collan's blood turned to ice as he was brought before cloaked, yellow-eyed, pale, and wrinkled Sith Lord. He wanted to run screaming from the room in utter and abject terror. Every fiber of his being bent itself towards doing so.

And even more so...Collan felt the call of the Dark Side. The words he spoke ignited a darkness in him that he'd never felt. Pleasure more than pain. Lust more than rage. It spoke to him differently than he had ever felt it. It wasn't the incessant little giggle and picking it had been. This was vibrant, alive...electric! Power to do as he pleased...not just revenge...but real power. It washed over him.

Trust the Force

Collan let himself feel it fully. He knew what he was doing. This was the time of testing. Did he have strength to stand against himself? He didn't know.

His father had failed that test. His complaint of unfairness echoed across time and space. The little boy Collan had been didn't understand or know what Inigo had meant. But he did now: the Jedi path demanded complete and utter surrender. You could not possess or seek to possess and be able to walk it. It required the surrender of self. The abnegation of pleasure and desire.

Collan stood at the same...well...in honesty...a similar crossroad. Giving in would be so easy. So simple. Accept the lie and move on. Become what you were meant to be...that was the whisper of the Dark Side.

Trust the Force... Such a simple thing. Yet it was so hard. The fear was so strong; Collan had fallen to his knees as his legs turned to water. His head bowed before the Emperor. Give in the voices implored. Pleaded. Cajoled.

Trust the Force

It was simple. The slave pits. That party. The feel of Ch'lana's saber arcing across the hall because Collan had trusted the Force. The pain on his friends' faces.

Emotion, yet peace...
Ignorance, yet knowledge
Passion, yet serenity
Death, yet the Force

In the hall, Collan had made his peace with dying. So many times, he had laid his life on the line. Why? Because he chose it. Not because it was easy, but because it was right.

Yea though I walk through the valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil. For the Force is my ally...

Trust the Force

It was so simple and so hard and so right. He was who he was and nothing could change that. Only he could. Pain. Suffering. Death. They were a part of him and his path.

Inigo Rosteirne had chosen his. Collan had his own. And they were not the same. Maybe he was not stronger than his father, but he was honest about how he felt. Or so Collan hoped.

That hope...and the peace he felt through the Force lifted some but not all of the veil of fear. After all, Collan knelt before what was perhaps the most powerful Sith Lord of all time. Vastly evil and capable of anything. He should be afraid and wary and cautious. His mind was an open book. But it was his mind and his soul was his own.

Trust the Force

He gathered himself. Those little bits that made him Collan Rosteirne, Jedi Apprentice to Commander Dailen. That was his his choice.

"I knew that you would if the veil of my deception hadn't been penetrated already," the words Collan spoke he hoped they carried an even tone. Not flat but not containing his fear. Only a statement of fact.

Collan's heartbeat thudded in his ears. Chill sweat poured from the tight places of his body. He could get past that. The Force had brought him here and now he would trust in it...

You cannot see it, but you know the twisted old man smiles. Can feel that smile.

"So you have learned the Jedi penchant for passive acceptance. How disappointing. I had expected more from the son of Darth Banen."

He ascends the steps once again, and takes a seat in his throne. You raise you head, almost against you will, and see a smile that freezes your blood.

"How did you come to be here, hmmm? Did you receive a vision from the Force? Did you feel a call, drawing you here, hmm?" He leans forward. "Did you really believe the Force called you here?" The mockery in the voice cuts like a knife, and the Emperor leans back and chuckles.

"You are here because I called you."

Collan felt a rising urge of defiance to bring to his voice. Tell the twisted old bastard what he really thought. He smoothed it over: wits, the Force, and a little luck. That's what he needed. The ice in his veins and on his mind wanted to crush him.

Who was he to have a vision in the Force? He was insignificant...pointless. But then again how woukd a creature like Palpatine found him? Did he seriously have such exquisite control? And of course, it was likely that the old Sith was right now in his head, listening. He'd know what he was thinking and how to turn his own mind against him.

There was no point in games so Collan said simply, "It doesn't matter either way. The Force. You. I still made the choice to come here. No one made me. Though the lecture on...'passive acceptance' seems odd. What would you expect from the son Darth Banen? Though I wonder what he would say if he knew you had known where to find me?"

He chuckles.

"I did not need to find you, boy. I merely exerted my will and the Force rang like a bell, calling a dozen former Jedi to my side, you among them. Some of them are now dead. Some became inquisitors. One became a Hand, the expression of my will. Others... remain undecided." The tone leaves no doubt which group Collan belongs to - undecided.

"You will learn the error of your ways, one way or the other, boy. I only seek to determine if you are worth my time, or if I should leave you to Darth Banen." He pauses and chuckles. "Though there may be some value in turning you over to my apprentice..." He pauses before laughing. "Yesss, yess. That may prove most beneficial."

The humour fades, and his eyes pierce you. "I wonder what path would you choose... Me? Your father? Dark Vader? Or death?"

Collan's blood still ran cold around the Emperor. He could be lying or telling the truth. The question was: how could you tell the difference? Collan personal storehouse of Jedi Lore was significant but small. He'd never heard of a Jedi being able to exert his will in that way.

"So basically, you made a ripple of dark side power and waited to see what Jedi or Jedi hopeful would show up to challenge you? That sounds less like a call and more like...fishing?"

It was commentary but still impressed Collan in both the arrogance to do it at all and the amount of power it likely required. What he'd felt carried no evil taint or savor but tge Force calling him to Horuz. That suggested an indirect call.

"I'll grant you that is a most impressive feat. What was the point? You have a well nighnunstoppable fleet? At least two powerful users of the Force, counting my father. It all seems like overkill. And quite honestly, a little risky."

This was all done conversationally while his inside voices gibbered like mad to run away and run away now. Or to give in...work for the old man.

Then again...it seems likely that the Emperor wanted him to resist or at least defy him. All the better so that when Collan was finally broken, he'd be well and truly broken. And that made Collan smile right back at the Emperor, not condescendingly, nor smugly, but some quiet confidence. Collan didn't honestly know what it would take to break him. It would just be a lot.

He smiles, completely unfazed.

"In time, you will come to understand that servants, fleets and armies - even the Force itself - are but useful tools; a means to an end. In time, you will learn the true nature of power."

He waves a hand, and behind you a blast door opens. You hear booted feet approach.

"It only remains to be seen if you learn this lesson before, or at the moment of, your death."

The black armoured figure (or another just like him) arrives and kneels, head bowed.

The Emperor says, "We are done. See that he is made... comfortable... until Darth Banen arrives."

"Yes, my lord."

The cuffs on your wrists suddenly send lances of pain shooting up your arms. You are able to control the pain, but it takes concentration to summon the force, so you are barely aware of your surroundings as you are led away. You become aware of a number of red-armoured guards falling into step with you, and eventually, your need to suppress the pain ends.

As your awareness returns, you find yourself strapped to an inclined table. Your head swims, and you feel unaccountably dizzy. As the moments go on, the feeling becomes worse, and you empty your stomach all over yourself from the vertigo. You cannot focus - your head feels like it is filled with glue.

Somewhere behind you, a voice that sounds like it is speaking slowly, and through thick sack cloth says, "He is ready."

Suddenly, you are screaming. Your muscles spasm painfully, and your body strains against the restraints. It goes on a long time, and your lungs burn because you cannot flex your muscles to breathe in. Then it stops, and you gasp, barely conscious, as your body twitches from the aftershocks of the pain.

Then it hits you again.

And again...

[to be continued...]

The world is pain. Endless pain, broken only with brief pauses. But the pauses are somehow worse, because you know they are going to end. Stimulants flow through your veins, heightening every sensation, and your mind is filled with cotton, so you can barely string two thoughts together. It is so hard not to hate the impassive technicians that are operating the machinery that threatens to rip your mind apart.

Then, a voice. A vision? Delrium?

Your mother, speaking with your uncle's voice as she strikes you with a lightsabre. "Hold on. Help is near." You try to parry, but she is too quick, and cuts both your arms off. You fall to the ground, agony lancing up your arms. She reaches down and lifts your head, touching your cheek gently. You look up, and it is no longer your mother, but the face of Demaia, only her flesh is seared and clings to her skull like a hideous mask. She looks at you a moment before she says, "It will be over soon. Hang on, Collan." She then runs you through, slowly, her face completely empty of emotion.

You awake to the world of pain, like every nerve in your body has fire running through it. Somewhere, the medical training tells you the body has limits to the amount of pain it can feel. They must have done something to override that, because this agony is beyond endurance.

[to be continues, but feel free to post reactions.]

The red black fog of pain clouded all but the clearest of images. There was only the pain and the call of the Dark Side. It whispered to let his anger take the pain on. Let rage flow through and dull the terrible blades scything through him. Even so, the power of Collan's mind was not yet exhausted. This was nothing like the slave pit of the syndicate. That was a slow inexorable crushing of the spirit and body. This was intense and meant to force a break quickly.

A tiny almost insignificant part of Collan's mind was able to assess the process during a period of calm. This is a highly effective torture. Collan knew that at some point he'd break: the question was if it would be a mental or physical breaking. The techs were very very good at making his pain amplify. They must be doing something to the nerves and his brain chemistry. At some point, his body should shut down his conscious mind but they were either that good or had him on drugs to keep him conscious. Six of one...

Red black fog filled his mind again. Unbearable. His voice ragged from his screams. Sore. Fire and electricity along all his nerves.

Mother! Demaia! Why did they strike? Was that the pain? Help? On the way? Over soon? Yes...let it be over. Let death come. That was what he felt. Death would be best. Pass into the Force. Let go. No pain. No anger. He would not hurt his friends or the cause. But neither could he help. He did what he could. It was time...he'd fight for as long as he could though. He baguely recalled that he had to keep going but not quite why. Stay strong just for a while longer. Hold!

He tried to recite the Jedi Code mentally. Emotion, yet peace. Ignorance, yet knowledge. Passion, yet serenity. Death, yet the Force. Over and over and over. He tried to keep track of where he was. The Code was his touchstone to his life as a Jedi. He used it to remind himself not to give in. Hold to yourself and the Force. Let the Code bind you...just a bit more...emotion yet peace...death yet the Force...

Strange visions continue, and the pain is ever present. Yet through it, something different happens. Like a buzzing in the back of your head, you sense something different. External. You cannot identify it, nor really comprehend what it might mean, but something has changed nearby.

Then suddenly the pain stops with an aftershock that is almost worse. Your body twitches uncontrollably for several seconds, but you hear a frightened voice yelling, "Seal the door!"

Even if you had control of your body, you are still securely bound. But the techs operating the machinery have left their posts, obviously afraid, so the pain machine stands silent.

Collan looked around the room, trying to focus his thoughts and see what opportunities he had. This was definitely one but what was the scope of it. His body was currently out of comission...too much pain and too many drugs. He needed healing...but deep concentration to effect that might stymie an opportunity. Battlefield tactics 101: assess and then act.

The techs are scared. You recall seeing red armour on your way in, but there are no imperial guards visible.

The techs are drawing sidearms from a locker, and taking cover behind consoles and cabinets, intent on the door.

The twitching is starting to subside.
