As my eyes accustom themselves to the light of the dusky sky, I open my ears for any sounds nearby.

All seems quiet, save for the occasionally mournful sound of the wind in the trees.

satisfied, at least for the moment that all is well, I slowly roll to my knees, and then to a crouch, ever alert for indications of someone or something near by.  If, and when, I am certain that I am alone, I pull out the datapad and bring up the information I will need for the first part of my journey.  It is best, I think, to commit as much as possible to memory, in case the worst should happen, and I become separated from the device.  The fearsome looking blade is still strapped to my thigh, and its weight is almost.. comforting.
Remembering Khaliss' instructions, I drink from the catch pockets and check the seals of the suit that clings to me like a second skin.

The nights are surprisingly bright. The stars shining overhead actually cast a fair bit of light - certainly enough to see by.

You begin walking, and find after the first three or so hours, the suit is not quite as irritating. The seams and creases still cause some significant discomfort, and you find yourself constantly adjusting the suit to ease a pain or sore spot, but it seems to be getting better.

Along about midnight, you crest a small, grassy hill topped with a stand of stunted trees, and spot a bright light a few kilometers off. Even from here, you can see the force fences and typical Imperial architecture of an Imperial facility.

Dropping flat to the ground, i curse under my breath, and hope I wasnt spotted.
To be seen would mean certain death.  Ill have to go around.
I consult the datapad to find a circuitous route.  Once I have my route, I will have to be extra alert and aware, watching for patrols, sentry droids and the like.

Picking your way carefully, you give the small outpost a wide margin. You're travelling through some fairly rugged and overgrown country, so it's likely they can't detect you from the outpost itself. Still, patrol could be a danger, so you take your time, and are careful to stay out of sight.

Your alertness pays off, as you hear the sounds of some human voices before you spot them, somewhere up ahead. There is a low rise covered in bushes ahead that would likely give you cover if you wanted to investigate. There is also a small gully that takes you off to the right, and you might be able to avoid them completely that way.

[Actions?]

It sounds like 2 voices.

I ponder this little situation very carefully...
and decide to investigate a little more.
I make my way very slowly and carefully to the bushes that will give me the best cover, and try to hear the conversation.

You creep up to the low rise and poke your head over it, hiding behind a shrub.

About 50m away are a pair of scout troopers, apparently setting up some sort of apparatus that looks like a remote sensor unit. Their speeder bikes are nearby, about thirty meters away from them. The voices you hear were them, going about their work as they unpack the sensor unit from a packing case and set it up.

[Actions?]

They appear to be standard scout troopers, shiny white armour and all. Their blaster rifles are on their speeder bikes, but they have blaster pistols at their side.

You pull back, and apparently were not seen. You can take a long away around, or you can try and follow the gully.

You move down the gully, and manage to bypass the scout troopers. There is a tense moment when you accidentally flush some birds out of the bush where they were hiding, but nothing comes of it that you can tell.

A couple of kilometres later, the gully exits into a broad plain. There is still plenty of low cover, and it is dark, so you should be fine.

There is the occasional sound of TIE fighters flying, but they seem to be quite a ways south of you.

As the eastern sky starts to lighten, you find yourself on a ridge. Below you to the north, the plant life virtually vanishes. You are looking at a desolate rocky, sandy wasteland that stretches as far as the eye can see. This must be the fringes of the northern desert.

A cold wind blows, making you shiver for a few seconds before the suit's heater kicks in to counteract it.

As you climb down the ridge, you find a small ravine that should serve to provide some shelter.

While it doesn't seem to be much in the way of being able to provide a full windbreak, the ravine does seem to be my only option at this point.  Im just glad the suit has a built in to keep the worst of the cold out.

The bleak line of the desert stretching in front of me brings with it a wash of loneliness.  Not for the creature comforts of Cali's estate.. but.. for the creatures who live within its walls.

I can almost catch the scent of the patchouli based soap the Ari uses when she knows she will not be called to attend her uncle in the immediate future.

Once in the ravine, I begin to build what camp I can.

The day passes in restless sleep. The rocky area you are in combined with a near constant wind to create a strange, reverberating sound, like some otherworldly moan, that makes sleep difficult. For some reason, your thoughts are drawn to the strange man who found you in the wreckage of the pirate base. In your memory, you are sitting in his underground shelter by the light of a small lamp, pictures of a long-ago family on the stone walls around his small table. You remember he spoke to you, offering words of comfort, and in your memory he turns to you just as you remember, but the words he says are different than you remember.

"Dawson, who we are is 10% what happens to us, and 90% how we react to it. You are lonely and angry because you choose to be that way, consciously or not. It has become comfortable for you, and throwing that aside scares you. You think it defines who you are, but that is the tail wagging the dog. You can choose to be who you want to be, Dawson. But first you must know what it is you want to be. You must know who you want to be. Only then can you find peace.

"And you are lonely, even if you will not admit it. You seek solace in the arms of others, but in your heart you know that is only to mask the loneliness you feel. Jeremy, Kelso, Arienne... you were drawn to them to salve the lonliness you wear about you like a cloak. Will you set aside that burden? Do you have the courage to set aside the past and live your life in the moment?"

With a start you awaken to see a small rodent sniffing around your bag. At your movement, it scurries away.

Glancing at the sky, you see the sun has gone down, and the moaning wind is starting to fade. Before you stretches the unbroken expanse of the northern desert, and two months worth of walking lay before you.

Live my life in the moment?

Isnt that what I have been DOING????

I dont know.. is it anger???  Or.. is it fear?

I have gone so quickly from one life to another.. from wife, to fighter, to lover...

I shake my head abruptly, as if trying to shake these thoughts loose from my mind.   Now is not the time.

Gathering my meager belongings, I begin my day in the dusky light of the setting sun.
